How Much Should a Small Business Website Cost in Canada?

2 min read

A small-business website can cost very little or tens of thousands of dollars. The useful question is not “what does a website cost?” but “what work is included, and what does the site need to do?”

Two quotes can both say “five-page website” and describe completely different projects. One may be a template populated with client-supplied text. The other may include strategy, copy, custom design, SEO setup, forms, automation, analytics, conversion planning, and post-launch support.

The biggest cost drivers

·       Strategy and information architecture.

·       Copywriting and content development.

·       Template-based versus custom design.

·       Number and complexity of pages.

·       Booking, ecommerce, membership, forms, CRM, or other integrations.

·       SEO migration and redirect planning.

·       Photography, illustration, animation, or video.

·       Accessibility, multilingual requirements, and specialized compliance.

·       Revision rounds, project management, training, and support.

How to compare website quotes properly

Ask each vendor to define what they are doing, what you are supplying, what is excluded, who owns the assets, what happens after launch, and how existing SEO equity will be protected.

If one quote is dramatically cheaper, find the missing work before assuming you found the same product for less.

The expensive website is not always the high-priced one. It can also be the cheap one you have to rebuild in twelve months.

When a simple website is enough

Not every business needs a large site. If the offer is simple, the sales process happens mostly through conversation, and there are few SEO requirements, a focused one-page site can be more effective than ten pages of filler.

The test is whether the page answers the questions a qualified prospect needs answered before taking the next step.

FAQ

Is a one-page website bad for SEO?

Not automatically, but it limits how many distinct search topics the main site can target. A one-page commercial site can still work well when supported by separate article or insight URLs.

Should I choose Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, or another platform?

Choose based on the business requirements, internal skill, maintenance needs, integrations, and who will manage the site. The platform is less important than building the right site well.

Do I need ongoing website maintenance?

Usually some level of maintenance is sensible: platform updates, content changes, analytics review, broken-link checks, form testing, and periodic SEO or conversion improvements
