How Do I Know If My Marketing Is Actually Working?
Start with the outcome, not the dashboard
The simplest answer is that marketing is working when it creates a measurable change in something the business actually cares about.
That might be more qualified leads, higher conversion, lower acquisition cost, larger deals, shorter sales cycles, more repeat purchases, better enrollment, or stronger direct demand for the brand.
Leading indicators still matter
You do not always have to wait for revenue to move before learning something. Search impressions, click-through rate, landing-page conversion, booked calls, branded search, and email response can show whether the system is moving in the right direction.
The problem is treating those indicators as the finish line.
Ask three questions for every major metric
What changed? Why do we think it changed? What decision are we making because of it? If the report cannot answer the third question, it is probably describing activity rather than managing performance.
Watch the handoffs
Marketing may be working perfectly while the business result stays flat because the leak happens after the lead is generated. Slow response, inconsistent sales follow-up, weak offers, poor onboarding, or operational capacity can all hide good marketing performance.
Compare against a baseline
Before changing a website, rebrand, campaign, or channel mix, capture the current numbers. Otherwise every result becomes subjective after the fact.
If you are drowning in metrics but still cannot answer whether marketing is working, UMC’s diagnostic starts by identifying the number that should actually matter.
